This one-of-a-kind pendant necklace is made of fine silver and dichroic glass. The glass has waves of color, mostly blue with bits of pink, gold, and purple. It reminds me of the northern lights, which is why I call it Aurora Borealis. It is encased in heavily textured fine silver, with a couple of star accents towards the top: a silver one on the right and a star-shaped cubic zirconia (CZ) on the left. The pendant is shown on a thick black rubber cord with a sterling silver spring ring clasp, which is included.
The dichroic glass is capped with clear, giving it lots of depth. There is a clear section up at the top that looks like some sort of horizon. The glass is held in place by a thick bezel of fine silver, and a rolled bail that goes across the entire top of the pendant. The silver is textured with a design that looks sort of like waves, including in the back. The back of the pendant has cutouts of a moon and a star. It is hard to see, but I put a small ".999" in the silver and signed my initials in the back of the glass in the moon cut out.
I made dichroic glass cabochon in my kiln. After making the glass cabochon, I built the pendant around it using fine silver metal clay. This is clay that contains microscopic bits of silver mixed with a binder. After building the silver pendant around the glass, including adding the CZ, I again fired it in my kiln. The high temperatures burned away all the organic material in the clay, leaving only the silver and glass behind. I also added a patina to make the design show up. For more information on the materials and processes I use, please check the Policies section of my shop.
The last photo shows the pendant before firing the metal clay.
